Figures in orange moved to the previous trading day because the scheduled date is a holiday.
An index option or future is a contract with an end date. On that date it stops trading and settles against a closing value, and whatever the contract is worth at that moment is what you are paid or what you pay. Everything else about options pricing, time value above all, is counting down to it.
A weekly contract is written for a few days of life, a monthly one for several weeks. The practical difference is how fast the time value drains. A weekly option close to the money loses value quickly in its final two sessions, which is what makes expiry-week premium selling attractive and expiry-day short gamma dangerous. A monthly contract gives the same directional view more room to be right slowly.
Since November 2024 India has had far fewer weekly contracts than it once did. SEBI restricted each exchange to one weekly expiry, judging that the previous arrangement, where something expired almost every day of the week, was pulling retail traders into very short-dated speculation. NSE kept its weekly slot for Nifty. BSE kept its for Sensex. Everything else became monthly.
Nifty and Bank Nifty options are European and cash settled. You cannot be assigned early, and nothing is delivered. On expiry day the contract settles against a value computed from a closing window rather than the last traded price, so the final print you see on the chart is not necessarily the number your contract settles against. Stock options are the exception: those are physically settled, and an in-the-money short position can leave you with a delivery obligation.
There is no Bank Nifty weekly expiry. Weekly Bank Nifty options were discontinued in November 2024, when SEBI limited each exchange to one weekly expiry and NSE kept that slot for Nifty. Bank Nifty now has monthly contracts only, expiring on the last Tuesday of the month.
Tuesday. NSE moved Nifty expiry from Thursday to Tuesday with effect from September 2025. Monthly, quarterly and half-yearly Nifty contracts expire on the last Tuesday of their month.
The contract expires on the previous trading day instead. For example, Dussehra falls on Tuesday 20 October 2026, so that week's Nifty contracts expire on Monday 19 October.
No. NSE announced a move to Monday in a circular dated 4 March 2025, to take effect from 5 April 2025, then deferred it later that month. It was never implemented. Expiry is Tuesday.
Sensex weekly contracts expire every Thursday on BSE, and monthly contracts on the last Thursday. Bankex is monthly only, also on the last Thursday.
Dates are generated from the current NSE and BSE expiry rules and adjusted against the exchange trading holiday list, last reconciled on 3 October 2026. Exchanges publish the following year's holidays in December, so next year's shifted dates appear here once that circular is out. Always confirm a date with your broker or the exchange before trading it. NiftyWise is educational and not SEBI-registered; nothing here is investment advice.
